A Boundary Waters trip lives or dies by the pack. You carry everything over the portages, so every item has to earn its weight — but forget the wrong thing and you're miserable for a week. Here's the complete checklist, refined over a lot of trips.
Clothing (layers you can shed)
- 2–3 soft t-shirts (your base layer)
- 1 long-sleeve shirt for sun and bugs
- 1 cotton-rich hoodie for cold mornings and the paddle home
- Quick-dry shorts + pants, rain shell, swimsuit
- A cap and a beanie
- Wool socks, camp shoes, sturdy footwear for portages
Gear
- Canoe, paddles, PFDs, portage pack
- Tent, sleeping bag + pad, tarp
- Stove + fuel, cook set, water filter
- Map, compass, headlamp, first-aid, multi-tool
Food & the little things
Plan calorie-dense meals, pack out all trash, and don't forget sunscreen, bug spray, a dry bag for layers, and a paperback for the slow afternoons. Reserve your permit early on recreation.gov.
